Using Race to the Top funds, the FAMS pilot project will provide teachers with a deep understanding of how to effectively use and develop strong formative assessment strategies aligned to the newly adopted Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. During this pilot project, participating LEAs will develop a meaningful portfolio of formative assessment strategies and practices which can be replicated in districts across the state.
Formative assessment is a continuous instructional process used by teachers as part of a balanced assessment system to obtain evidence of student understanding. This evidence provides feedback to teachers and students, enabling teachers to make informed, constructive changes to instruction and learning in the classroom to deepen student knowledge and skills. In addition, formative assessment aids students in determining where they are in the learning progression. With the teacher’s help, each student can identify a goal, strategize methods to reach that goal and take ownership of his or her learning. Coaches will support LEAs in their formative assessment work by providing embedded professional development and support to participating teachers.
