Helping Your Child Gain Career Experience

Internships, job shadowing, volunteering and mentoring are valuable ways for your child to learn, test out a career and have some fun along the way. These experiences often have a big influence on a student’s future career.

Internships
Internships give your child real-world career experience. They may be paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time. To help your child find an internship, talk to guidance counselors, teachers, family friends and relatives. Encourage your high-school-age child to ask local businesses about internship opportunities. Don’t worry if your child ends up filing and doing entry-level tasks. They will learn a lot just by being in a business environment.

Job Shadowing
Your child may already have their heart set on a future job without knowing the day-to-day details of the job will entail. Or maybe your child has no idea what they plan to do when they graduate. Either way, job shadowing will show them what a job entails and help them find out what type of work is a good fit for them. See the following Job Shadowing Tips and Guidelines.

Volunteering
Volunteering is another great way for your child to explore the workplace. Ask local community organizations and your child’s guidance counselor about volunteer opportunities. The links below have information on volunteering and search tools for volunteer opportunities.

Mentoring
Mentoring can help your child achieve academic success. Mentors help students set career goals and make plans for the future. Children also can talk with their mentor about their job and work experience.
